柳心照智流 Ryushin Shouchi Ryu

Philosophy

The Wisdom of the Willow

柳の如く、不動の智慧を。

The essence of Ryushin Shouchi Ryu lies not in defeating an opponent, but in setting body and mind right through introspection, and so cultivating character. It is a way of nurturing Fudoshin — the immovable mind.

Named by its founder, Terutaka Kawabata, the school’s name holds two meanings. "Ryushin" — the willow heart — is the empty mind that rides the wind as a willow does, together with the immovable mind of the roots that spread through the earth and give the willow its suppleness. "Shouchi" — illuminated wisdom — is the attitude of examining oneself, one’s movement and conduct in pursuit of wisdom and truth, and of never ceasing to learn. The way that holds these two as its cause is Ryushin Shouchi Ryu.

There is no finishing this way. Nor is it a way completed by reading. You stand on the mat with a sword in your hands and watch, quietly, as your own mind becomes unsettled. Everything, we believe, begins only from there.

The roots of Ryushin Shouchi Ryu trace back to 1508, originating from Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu — a traditional martial art preserved in secrecy for over 400 years.

After its teachings were finally unveiled to the world following the Meiji Restoration, the techniques and spirit were inherited by our founder, Terutaka Kawabata. He established the school in 2006, later renaming it "Ryushin Shouchi Ryu" to reflect its core philosophy of the unwavering mind.

Today that soul is carried forward by the headmaster, Yoshio Watanabe. The school’s technique and spirit are transmitted beyond Japan as well, to practitioners who take up the same discipline abroad.
