Discipline 01

Iai

居合

居合の稽古

There are more than sixty iai forms. Each one asks you to picture someone who is not there. What you actually come to face, though, is not that figure but your own breathing and your own unsettled mind.

This is not training that measures strength. The sword is not swung with the arms but with the carriage of the body and the shifting of weight. For that reason it can be taken up regardless of size or physical power.

Smooth bearing is not cultivated for appearance. Movement without waste appears only when the mind has grown quiet. We repeat the same form so that the body learns that quiet.

Discipline 02

Kumitachi

組太刀

組太刀の稽古

Kumitachi is practice done facing another person. A wooden sword (bokuto) is used; as practice progresses, blunted blades (habiki) or live blades may appear.

Some things cannot be learned alone: the distance between two people (maai), the matching of breath (kokyu), and the plain fact that you are rushing. Only in front of another person do the habits of your own mind become visible.

Nothing here is decided by winning or losing. Because the two entrust themselves to each other, the greatest care goes to not injuring your partner. Practice opens and closes with a bow — not as etiquette, but because without it this practice could not take place at all.

Discipline 03

Tameshigiri

試し斬り

試し斬りの稽古

Because tameshigiri employs a live blade, an instructor is always present and safety comes before everything else. The target is makiwara or tatami facing (omote); green bamboo on rare occasions.

Whether the cut succeeds is not decided by strength. Let the line of the blade stray by a little and no amount of force will cut. Carry it as the form asks and it cuts with surprising quiet. Tameshigiri is an honest answer to the question of your own form.

No one takes up a live blade at the beginning. Kata with the wooden sword, then kumitachi, in order — and we invite you on when you yourself are ready. There is no need to hurry.

You may begin without owning any equipment, without previous experience of the martial arts, and without having moved your body in a long while. Women are warmly welcome to come and observe. Nothing — neither age nor fitness — needs to be in order before you arrive. If anything concerns you, please ask us beforehand.
